A lifeline has been provided by Octopus Energy to guarantee homebuyers no energy bills. The UK energy crisis has swept the nation and now, one of the leading energy suppliers has teamed up with housebuilder Ilker Homes to create a new support scheme.
The spiralling cost of living has meant many are struggling with energy bills. To combat this, Octopus and Ilker have decided to make a renewable project that allows buyers to purchase self-sufficient homes that are fitted with battery storage, solar panels and air source heat pumps.
These homes won’t be powered by gas, meaning that the only energy prices that homeowners have to pay are if their usage exceeds more than 10MWh of energy, however, this amount is treble the annual usage compared to the standard households use.
In addition, any excess energy produced by these homes will be fed back to the grid. At the moment, home buyers would be looking at paying up to £9,000 extra to have these renewable technologies installed in their homes.
The project is set to begin in Essex, with a pair of two-bedroom, semi-detached family homes to be piloted. Plans are in place to extend the scheme to more than 10,000 homes by 2030.
If you aren’t looking to buy a new home, but are considering using green technologies then you are in luck. For those looking to find a cheaper supplier or install renewable technologies, you can contact Energy Brokers for more information.
There is a blueprint in place for all homes across the UK to become self-sufficient forever and the nation has some of the best renewable technology in Europe.
For a 12-month period, Octopus is guarantying zero bills and there are expectations that further down the line, zero tariffs will become a permanent fixture for these self-sufficient homes.
With the latest energy price cap set to skyrocket to £2,800 in October, this latest project could be a welcomed relief for new homeowners. Predictions by energy regulator Ofgem suggest that a further 12 million people could be put into fuel poverty.
Furthermore, spiralling wholesale gas prices are adding fuel to the energy crisis fire. Struggling households could benefit from this new scheme, with the hopes of more projects popping up around the UK.
The latest Government strategy has called for cutting emissions with a focus on slashing energy bills for households. Government initiatives including the £505million BEIS Energy Innovation Programme (EIP) and the £ 1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio aim to tackle this issue.
The Net Zero Innovation Portfolio funding is targeting low-carbon technologies with the EIP looking at a wide range of clean energy investments such as nuclear innovation., smart systems and carbon capture with storage.
In recent news, the UK government issued an announcement that a further £31million of the new funding will be provided to reduce the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels with a dual focus on cutting energy bills.
