Welsh government take further action on forming their Interministerial group for Climate Change, Net Zero and Energy

July 8th saw the Welsh Government publish a document regarding the purpose of the Interministerial Group for Net Zero, Energy and Climate Change.

This writeup is to provide references and support effective engagement and collaboration in areas of shared interest between the portfolio ministers leading on these issues within the UK administrations, and is led by ministers from across the UK.

These names include;

  • Rt Hon Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP (Minister of State for Energy, Clean Growth and Climate Change, UK government)
  • Michael Matheson MSP (Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport. Scottish Government)
  • Mairi McAllan MSP (Minister for the Environment, Biodiversity and Land Reform, Scottish Government)
  • Julie James MS (Minister for Climate Change, Welsh Government)
  • Edwin Poots MLA (Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Northern Ireland Executive)
  • Paul Frew MLA (Minister for the Economy, Northern Ireland Executive)
  •

Others are welcome in situations where the IMG will agree that the purpose of more members is necessary and relevant to discussion and portfolio.

Following 2020’s Progress Report on reducing emissions, more than ever, it is imperative for the UK to keep its sustainability and public health in mind. The country needs sustainable energy sources that will not only meet our current needs but also those of future generations. This means taking a step back from fossil fuels and switching over to clean energies like solar power or wind turbines so we can enjoy cleaner air while still maintaining economic growth as well as close ties with other countries on climate change policy despite Brexit negotiations dragging on longer than anticipated – They are certainly not giving up the target of Net Zero emissions by 2050.

The Committee also set out plans to provide the UK with the accurate information about climate change that will allow for an effective understanding of how we can work together on mitigating these risks; this also means reevaluating the needs and requirements of the energy system, including in the context of decarbonising the UK economy.

They also discussed issues that require Ministerial dialogue and cooperation beyond the Transition Period, such as climate change.

Some of these discussions are about not just environmental protection but sustainability within trade agreements between countries like India.
